About

I am a photo enthusiast and a writer who lives in Annapolis, Maryland. I fell in love with photography in journalism school in the 1970s and have been making images ever since. After retiring about five years ago I started an annual calendar for my family and extended family using my images, which has been great fun (and good motivation for getting out to shoot). I also wanted a place online to share my photos, and that's one of the reasons for this website.

The other reason is to share my writing. As a young man, I dreamed of becoming a novelist and dedicated much of my 20s to writing fiction. I received kind words and encouragement from a number of respected agents and publishers, but I never did get a contract. Just as well. That early work was lacking in significant ways.

After a decade of trying, I had to give it up. And the giving up lasted for more than 30 years. From where I sit now, that doesn't seem like such a long time to wait.

I've been writing short fiction since I retired, and I'm pleased with how the stories have turned out. Although I made my living largely as a writer and editor for newspapers and later for the federal government, as with photography I consider myself an enthusiast when it comes to writing fiction. I made a half-hearted attempt to place some of the new stories but quickly determined it wasn't worth the effort to send them off and get a form-letter rejection, or hear nothing back at all. I do want to share my work, though, and I want the stories to be read, especially by my family and friends.

The plan is to post a few stories now, and then a new story every few weeks until the supply runs out (it won't take long). The comments will be turned on, and I welcome your thoughts. If the stories aren't to your liking, not to worry. If you call me on the phone or see me on the street, the golf course or at the supermarket, you can pretend you never saw this website, and we can talk about the kids, the weather, or the price of eggs.

Cheers,

Bruce
